The History of the Neon Light

While there are a number of individuals involved in the founding and creation of neon signs, the man credited with the invention is Georges Claude, who first displayed two tubes in the Paris Expo in December of 1910.  Prior to that, the Geissler tube employed the same idea, as a glass tube that displayed the principles of electrical discharge.  Also, at the 1893 World Columbian Exposition in Chicago, the famous inventor Nikola Tesla displayed neon lamp signs.  The first commercial neon sign was sold to a Paris barber in 1912.

Today, a neon business sign is one of the best advertising tools for any business, acting as a bright calling card to invite customers into the storefront.  Neon signs can simply advertise that your location is open for business or can call to specific clientele, noting unique or in-demand services and products that you offer in your business.  Especially in bars and restaurants, neon beer signs have become popular, letting people know what the facility serves while also creating a specific atmosphere.

A neon business sign is a great calling card because people look for things that stand out, and the bright lights of the neon sign are so in contrast to the surrounding colors that they cannot be ignored.  Getting a message out about your location is easy in this way, since you are sure to have individuals passing by all the time.  Other forms of advertisement may be passed over in a printed publication or thrown away as part of bulk mail, but no one can ignore a bright neon sign.

History has proved that neon signs work for increasing business and bringing in a more diverse clientele.  There are few means of welcoming customers that are as effective, with the exception of perhaps sale signs posted on the storefront.  Still, even sale signs won’t do any good in drawing in business if passers-by are unaware that you are open.  Neon signs can let them know in no uncertain terms that you are open for business.

While the neon sign as we know it is less than 100 years old, it has proven itself as a staple for effective advertising and for assuring success in your business.  The initial expense and some periodic maintenance are so much less expensive than mass mailings and so much more effective that you can’t look past the need for a neon sign for your business.
